Mountain Flower Goat Dairy (MFGD)

Assistant Herd Manager

Job Title: Assistant Herd Manager
Job Status: Part time, Year-round, Salaried Position
Reports To: Herd Manager
Pay: Starting Salary $22,000 / year. Hours: Max of 25 hours/week in the winter months and 45 hours/week during high season. This job has salary and job growth potential. Benefits considered after 1 year of employment.

Job Purpose:
To support the Mountain Flower Goat Dairy daily operations which include: Herd Share milk production, rotational grazing and education programs. Specifically, daily goat dairy operations and general herd assistance.

Major Functions and Accountability

●   Reports to Herd Manager

●   Assists the Herd Manager in operating the Milk Share program

●   Assists the Herd Manager in maintaining a healthy herd and coordinating grazing            rotation

●   Assists Herd Manager with public programming and education

●   Coordinates with other staff and landowners to fulfill program needs

●   Assists Herd Manager in leading and teaching interns and volunteers

 

Daily Operations

Ability to lead a typical chore shift that includes, but is not limited to, the following:

●       Milking animals with adherence to food safety protocol

●       Herd share program maintenance, milk fulfillment, and delivery

●       Feeding and watering animals according to seasonal needs

●       Moving animals to/from pens according to rotational grazing plan

●       Assembling/disassembling electric fencing

●       Moving shade structure, water buckets, and hay to designated grazing areas

●       Raking pens and moving compost to designated areas

●       Deep cleaning various areas around dairy (ie. milk parlor, milk processing room)

●       Restocking/moving hay bales

●       Restocking grain

●       Ability to work in a wet, cold, and hot environment

●       Ability to lift/move water buckets, hay bales, and other heavy objects - up to 75 pounds.

 

Animal Healthcare

●       Monitoring and logging general health of herd on a daily basis

●       Assist Herd Manager with vaccinations and other medical procedures

●       Assist Herd Manager with breeding, pre-natal goat care, and kidding

●       Hoof trimming and logging

●       Identify sick animals and work with Herd Manager and/or vet to develop a health plan

 

Education and Tours

●       Assist the Herd Manager with educational activities and tours for Field

Trips, Tours, Public Bottle Feedings, Team Building Events and Offsite Events

●       Ability to communicate effectively with visitors to the farm, fellow staff

and interns, volunteers and the land owners

●       Effectively engage with farm visitors of all ages including: children, teens,

people with disabilities and seniors

 

Overseeing and Training Volunteers

●       Ability to lead a chore shift with clear instruction, and oversight, of volunteers

●       Assist with volunteer work groups

 

Administrative

●       Log animal health and feed/water amounts after every shift

●       Maintain records for Milk Share and grazing

 

Organizational Participation

●       Attend weekly planning meetings for Dairy operations

●       Attend weekly cross-site staff meetings between Growing Gardens and Mountain Flower Goat Dairy

●       Attend 1 all-staff meeting per month

●       Attend All-Staff on-site work days (in lieu of staff meeting once a month)

●       Help at events as needed

 

 

Special Requirements:

●       Hours change seasonally and additional time may be required, including weekend and evening work and long hours as necessary

●       Weekend work is required on a rotating basis with other staff. This increases in the busy season (April through September)

●       Available to assist with various on and off-farm events, including leading small tour groups

●       Ability to operate computers and mobile devices

●       Ability to interact with volunteers, interns, youth, people with disabilities and the general public on a daily basis

●       Ability to work on uneven terrain in the field

●       Must be able to successfully manage multiple, high priority tasks in a fast-paced environment

●       Must have a reliable vehicle for transportation between site and partner organizations. Must have a cell phone. 

●       Must submit to a fingerprint background check
