Job Description: 

The Director of Programs reports to the President and CEO and is responsible for providing overall direction of the Foundation's funding program to achieve concrete change and leading the Program Team, which currently consists of five direct reports. The ideal candidate will have strong experience growing programs and organizations and demonstrated ability to adapt and be flexible in a changing environment. A proven track record of managerial success is key.

As a thought partner to the Executive Team, the Director will help shape the Foundation’s strategy to expand its impact across Colorado and the nation. To succeed in this role, the Director must be a strategic thinker who can move from vision to execution, perceiving emerging opportunities for impact and building a goal-oriented strategy. The Director must demonstrate a strong understanding of the mission and vision of NextFifty Initiative and be able to express that clearly to grantees and community stakeholders.

As a young organization, NextFifty Initiative is in a state of development and maturation. All roles within the organization are subject to modification without a change in the written position description. The duties written below express the major responsibilities of the position but are not all-inclusive of the activities that will be coordinated or executed by the role.

This is an office-based position with regular travel in the Denver metro region and around the state of Colorado. Travel outside the state is expected on a less regular basis. Working remote (telecommuting) up to one day per week may be allowed subject to CEO approval.

Areas of Responsibility
  • Lead the Foundation’s Program Team in their funding efforts including grantmaking, process/systems improvement and usage of data, metrics and evaluation.
  • Manage, inspire, mentor and coach a high-performing team with a range of skills and experience levels.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Team and the Program Officer, Strategic Initiatives, create and implement a plan for funding and targeted investments consistent with the Foundation’s strategic plan.
  • Assist in building the Foundation’s capacity to play a broader leadership and convening role within the philanthropic community, including enabling the Foundation to identify emerging opportunities across the state and nation, align funders to advance mutual goals and raise awareness of activities and advances in the aging space.
  • Working with the Program Associate, develop and enhance methods and processes to evaluate the impact of the Foundation’s investment in aging initiatives.
  • Collect and share knowledge that is generated through Foundation funding as well as gleaned externally with community stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement strategies for strengthening and growing our community relationships, including thoughtful and respectful entry into communities and issues that may be less familiar to us currently.
  • Be a lead force in driving NextFifty Initiative’s learning culture by leading efforts to maintain high levels of quantitative and qualitative awareness of the issues, challenges and opportunities facing older adults in Colorado as well as nationwide, ensuring that grantee expertise and community experience is sought and incorporated into our work.
  • Design, implement and manage a Program Committee to assist with grant review.
  • Has direct responsibility for evaluating and stewarding a portfolio of grants.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to further the community's aging agenda through a variety of methods other than grant making such as convening, technical assistance, serving on committees and task forces, etc.
  • Participate in NextFifty Initiative activities and projects that serve to promote the mission of the organization, cultivate promising ideas for funding and identify needs and interests in the area of aging.
  • Keep current on aging issues and develop subject matter expertise through literature review, contact with social and professional communities and participation in relevant meetings and conferences.
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant work and life experience required.
  • Experience in grant making and deep understanding of the philanthropic community.
  • Five to seven years of professional experience, some portion in the social sector required.
  • Three to five years of leadership level experience with responsibility for building and sustaining organizational capacity.
  • Knowledge and ability to express and measure program and impact evaluation.
  • Proven track record in managing, inspiring and empowering successful teams.
  • Proven experience in operationalizing values, vision and strategies to achieve priorities and goals.
  • Significant skills in organizing, analyzing, presenting data, reaching conclusions and developing recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of individuals, including working across different settings, communities and issues with people of diverse backgrounds, perspectives and cultures.
  • Capacity to adapt rapidly to changing priorities, objectives and situations, while being able to balance competing priorities and tasks and deliver timely work products.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts directly and professionally.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills; proven ability to be flexible in a team-oriented environment with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive, productive, open and supportive environment that motivates everyone to perform at their best.
  • An effective communicator, with strong oral and written skills including meticulous attention to detail.

  • Personal qualities of humility, integrity, accountability, eagerness to learn and a sense of humor.
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills.
  • Frequent sitting and standing. Occasional bending and reaching.
  • Lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Prolonged periods of time before a computer screen.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle independently.

Compensation/Benefits

The starting salary for this position is $95,000 annually.  Salary is commensurate with experience.
