Job Description: 

The Membership & Communications Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the American Cheese Society’s (ACS) association membership program, including but not limited to acquisition, cultivation, renewal/retention, and stewardship of members. This position assesses and serves the evolving needs of cheesemakers, retailers, and industry stakeholders through member benefits and services. In addition, this position executes communications from the ACS strategic Editorial Calendar including electronic marketing, social media, and website in support of membership and comprehensive brand initiatives to increase awareness and revenue generation. Serves as ACS membership database administrator.

Areas of Responsibility

Membership and Relationship Management

  • Oversees annual membership campaign, developing strategies to meet and exceed annual revenue goals for acquisition, retention, and engagement of members
  • Manages membership benefits fulfillment, to ensure timely, efficient stewardship that supports a positive experience
  • Reports regularly on membership performance based on financial progress to budget and additional fundraising goals as part of comprehensive Development Plan
  • Processes new member and renewal invoices
  • Writes and executes appeals and stewardship collateral, utilizing multi-channel direct marketing to support association goals
  • Coordinates annual giving opportunities based on donor performance and best practices
  • Manages the ACS Ambassadors program, recruiting and training new volunteers to increase association outreach efforts
  • Serves as the Staff Liaison for the Scholarship Selection Panel, providing administrative level support to American Cheese Education Foundation and overseeing logistical details of scholarship applications
  • Produces high-level research on prospective members using a variety of resources and lead generation opportunities information to assess financial capacity, philanthropic/program/service interests, giving propensity, and likelihood to join association

 

Communications

  • Maintains schedules and mail plans, serving as primary liaison with vendors and internal teams to ensure timely completion of projects
  • Responsible for copywriting, design, editing, production/mailing, and list selection/segmentation strategy on all direct mail, membership, and stewardship pieces
  • Manages ACS website and social media presence, reporting on metrics
  • Conducts regular A/B testing of marketing and solicitation campaigns to ensure effective messaging strategy, reporting on results and making data-driven decisions
  • Identifies and evaluates the needs of ACS members through assessments and surveys

 

Database Administration

  • Oversees membership database as primary administrator, ensuring accuracy and integrity of all data, acknowledgement, and reporting capabilities
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for database use to ensure seamless operation, security, and financial reconciliation
  • Provides ongoing training and information updates for all staff members, updating database procedure manual regularly
  • Creates reports and mailing lists as needed for ACS leadership and staff

 

Administrative/Event Support

  • Answers phones, serves as back-up office support as needed, providing excellent customer service and welcoming environment for guests and members
  • Provides support on-site and leading up to ACS Annual Conference; includes staffing registration desk and training temps and volunteers on registration desk procedures (travel required)
  • Creates and maintains position’s standard operating procedures manual, including updates and training for staff as applicable
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or related field with a minimum of three years’ experience in non-profits
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising with a successful track record in membership and/or annual giving programs
  • Knowledge and experience with non-profit databases (ACS utilizes MemberSuite; training offered)
  • Demonstrated organizational, analytical/creative problem-solving skills and prioritize/develop methodologies to support goals
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Experience interacting with members on a personal level with tact and sensitivity to confidential information
  • Resourcefulness, resilience, persistence and the willingness to take initiative to exceed goals
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines independently or as part of a team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, social media management, and related software
  • Diplomacy and comfort in interacting with people of all backgrounds - loves working with people!
  • Ability to work flexible/additional hours as needed and to travel at least once each year to Annual Conference
  • Reliable team player with a positive, forward-thinking outlook
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks with a zeal for the all-hands-on-deck feel of a non-profit – no task is too big or too small
  • Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree or professional certification in non-profits, fundraising, or related field; Five or more years association or foundation experience (ACS is a 501c6 with a 501c3 sister foundation)
Compensation/Benefits

Annual Salary: $45-$50K.
