Many nonprofit organizations are founded on passion and good intentions, yet one of their biggest challenges is increasing impact through earned and social media. The media and public respond to authentic stories – stories from the heart.

This four-hour workshop will dive into the basics of identifying your nonprofit's stories and how to communicate them to the media with heart. We’ll also cover the world of social media as a platform for effective outreach. Join us for Part 2, for hands on training on working effectively with media.

Erin Yoshimura, Empowerful Changes



Erin Yoshimura is the Founder of Empowerful Changes, LLC, a company that focuses on empowering clients to find their voice and stand with vigor through leadership and cultural intelligence training and executive coaching.



She’s created training programs for clients including KUSA-9News, Raytheon, IBM, Comcast-NBCUniversal, SCFD, Arvada Center for the Arts & Humanities and the Environmental Protection Agency. Erin trains executives and emerging leaders for Los Angeles-based LEAP (Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics). She created and conducts the first Emerging Leaders Program in Denver specially designed for Asian American Pacific Islanders.



Erin is a certified emotional intelligence trainer, certified professional coach and recently received her certification in Conversational Intelligence® Coaching, the next evolution of coaching combined with neuroscience. Due to advances in neuroscience, Erin recently earned a certificate in Foundations of Neuro-Leadership through the NeuroLeadership Institute.



She served as the Executive Director of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, a 501c3 non-profit organization celebrating pan-Asian culture that is the largest dragon boat festival across the U.S.



Gil Asakawa



Gil Asakawa is a journalist, editor, author and blogger with 40 years of experience in the media. His journalism experience runs the gamut from being the music editor for Denver's alternative weekly newspaper Westword to managing the DenverPost.com website. He’s also an experienced PR and social media expert, helping his wife Erin Yoshimura to publicize the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival since it’s first year. It’s now the largest dragon boat festival in the U.S. Gil has also managed social media content for AARP’s Asian American marketing team and other organizations.



He’s also a nationally-known Asian American speaker and blogger, at www.Nikkeiview.com. For his extensive pioneering online work within the Asian American blogosphere, he received the “Voice Award” from the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) in 2013.



He’s the author of “Being Japanese American” originally published in 2004 and revised in 2015, a history of Japanese in America, and co-author of “The Toy Book” (Knopf, 1991), a history of the toys of the Baby Boom generation. Gil’s day job is in the journalism department of CU-Boulder.





Qualifies for Excellence in Nonprofit Principles and Practices. Completion of a post-training evaluation is required for this training to count toward recognition.
