Position Summary:

Palmer Land Trust seeks a Community Engagement and Philanthropy Manager to implement our new community engagement strategy and manage community and donor relationships. Reporting to Palmer’s Executive Director, and working under Palmer’s interim communications and fundraising director, the manager will be on the front lines of building a new and robust community engagement program focused on rallying the community around land and water conservation. With nearly 136,000 acres under permanent conservation, Palmer Land Trust is one of the leading nonprofit land conservation organizations in Colorado, and is one of the twenty largest local land trusts in the nation. This is an exciting and unique position to mobilize people around an important cause central to our health and quality of life in Colorado.

The primary focus of the position is twofold: 1) mobilizing and activating key audiences in target areas including Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Fremont Counties, and 2) managing relationships with prospective and existing donors to Palmer Land Trust. Using strategic communication strategies, a variety of events, and exemplary donor stewardship practices, this position will be Palmer’s key people and community connector. This position will help to bring the message of land and water conservation into the forefront of our region’s priorities through activities on the land, conveying stories of the importance of conservation and nature, and building deep relationships with donors to the organization.

This position requires an outgoing individual who is interested in engaging the people and communities we serve, with a vision for building more community involvement for Palmer Land Trust. As one of the “best kept secrets” in southern Colorado, we want Palmer Land Trust to become a household name and this position is critical to that success! The selected individual will have excellent writing and storytelling skills, a warm and engaging demeanor, and most importantly, will have a passion for nature, farming and ranching, and outdoor recreation in the West.

Areas of Responsibility

Essential Functions:

Donor relations management: Manage people, fundraising activities, and strategies that serve to initiate, strengthen, and grow donor engagement. Build a deep knowledge of Palmer’s donor base and leverage constructive and effective relationships between donors and staff and board members.

  • Manage a $500,000+ annual fund program including creating and implementing an annual fundraising plan
  • Develop and manage annual donor engagement plan including donor meetings, property field visits, events, and deliver exemplary donor stewardship services.
  • Provide philanthropic-focused administrative support to the Executive Director including setting up donor meetings, managing a busy calendar, scheduling networking opportunities, etc.
  • Engage the business community and increase business sponsorships and partnerships in support of strategic goals. Identify target businesses and manage outreach process.
  • Ensure effective use of CRM database, and provide direct management of donor and fundraising components
  • Conduct donor research
  • Track fundraising metrics

 

 

Community engagement/public events: Build and implement a comprehensive community engagement strategy that enhances awareness and understanding of the role land conservation plays in our region and builds vocal and financial support for permanent land protection in southern Colorado.

 

  • Develop and implement programs and events that engage Palmer’s target audiences and donors throughout our service territory in southern Colorado.
  • Build relationships and partnerships with community partners to support community engagement and organizational momentum.
  • Manage Palmer’s signature events including the Southern Colorado Conservation Awards and Women in Conservation. Duties include event and registration management, guest and sponsor stewardship, coordination of communications pertaining to the event and more.
  • Oversee volunteers associated with Palmer events.
  • Act as a Palmer representative at various community outreach events.
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, nonprofit management, or a related field
  • Passion and commitment to conservation and land protection
  • 4+ years successful related work experience working in non-profit event management, fundraising, communications, and/or marketing
  • Ability to think ahead, propose new ideas, be willing to adapt, and be proactive with addressing challenges or changing priorities
  • A willingness and excitement to engage a variety of demographics in land and water conservation
  • Excellent and creative verbal, writing, storytelling, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to take initiative, manage multiple tasks, have great attention to detail and superb organizational skills
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced working environment and within a variety of technology platforms
  • Proficiency with the following or similar software: Microsoft Office Suite, Slack, Mail Chimp, and basic office communication channels (e.g. email)
Compensation/Benefits

Salary & Benefits:

Salary range is $45,000 - $53,000 DOE. Compensation includes health insurance, retirement match, disability insurance, and a generous paid personal leave package. The position is based out of Palmer’s Colorado Springs office located in beautiful downtown, and in close proximity to ample recreation and open space opportunities.
