Position Purpose

The Director of Communications and Community Relations leads organization initiatives and outreach relative to strategic communications and engagement with external audiences whose support and involvement is identified as vital to the mission of RMHS. Builds useful relationships, works with the Sr. management team to influence news media coverage, motivates prospective donors and grant-makers, and educates the greater public about RMHS’s role in serving the ID/D Community. The Director functions as a member on RMHS’s Leadership Team, and will implement new programmatic and strategic initiatives. The Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the program aspects of the annual budget and forecasts for the programs noted above in conjunction with the CPO, CFO and ED and will serve as liaison to RMHS’s partners, including participation in meetings and on Committees.

Areas of Responsibility

Essential Duties

  • Collaborates in setting strategy and ensures goals are met. Responsible for annual departmental budget and revisions. Monitors and analyzes monthly expenditures.
  • Expands and mobilizes RMHS’s virtual and physical communities in order to raise public awareness and participation in advocacy initiatives; functions as authoritative source on issues of ID/D among the news media; delivers programmatic information effectively to external providers, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Establishes, delivers, and manages standards for and routinely updates communications portfolio that includes RMHS websites, enterprises, e-communications, social-media advocacy, off-line collateral, and multi-media presentations; aligns products with brand and marketing goals.
  • Develops education programs on ID/D for policy makers, service providers, the news media, and others for delivery through workshops, conferences, webinars, and web content.
  • Develops, manages, and evaluates RMHS’s media advocacy capacity; influences media depictions of ID/D and frequency of coverage; ensures effective public relations practices are in place; establishes key relationships within local, state, and national news media outlets; delivers routine media updates internally and externally.
  • Coordinates and organizes groundbreaking, grand opening, and other public relations events to promote the work of RMHS.
  • Directs systems related to managing communication and marketing assets: graphic, photo, video, exhibits, data, and other content files.
  • Develops and continually expands capacity to conduct and monitor professional literature and reports to enhance the production of all communications and policy-related products and projects.
  • Provides local and state-level leadership in advocacy campaigns; continually builds relationships with a diverse mix of individuals and organizations to maintain a robust network of external and internal supporters.
  • Assists with Board of Directors development.

Leadership Team Duties

  • Provides executive-level leadership to the Department and RMHS.
  • Implements long and short-range strategic corporate objectives, operating business plans, and policies
  • Represents RMHS’s interests in actions, communications, and decisions.
  • Enhances RMHS’s position as an innovator/thought leader/change agent in the field of human services.
  • Acts in a leadership role in the implementation of corporate initiatives/strategic planning/innovation management.
  • Engages in corporate risk management including legal liabilities for all of RMHS’s interests.
  • Actively works to create an engaged, diverse, high-performing organization.
  • Identifies and analyzes the effects of various social perspectives on the ID/D Community; develops and implements strategies to influence the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of key stakeholders in multiple public/private sectors. Supervises related staff and volunteer involvement

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Possesses significant knowledge re mass- and crises-communication techniques and best practices as well as community relations best practices.
  • Must possess exceptional skills in writing, editing, public speaking, and facilitation.
  • Proven achievement in leading the production, editing, and publishing of web and social media content to build large-scale online audiences and communities.
  • Exceptional supervisory and organization skills as demonstrated by prior experience leading multiple projects in an environment prone to frequent interruption, shifting priorities, and tight time frames.
  • Consistently superb customer service skills; excellent interpersonal/assertive communications skills demonstrating a high degree of emotional intelligence.
  • Knowledge of ID/D issues and demonstrated sensitivity to and a desire to work with the population.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in human services, social work, or related field.
  • Experience in social services, especially ID/D, is desired.

Driving Requirements

  • Valid drivers license
  • Proof of motor vehicle insurance
  • Personal vehicle in good operating condition for use during work
  • No major violations in the past three years.
  • No more than two moving violations in the past three years
  • Ability to meet and maintain agency driving requirements and operate agency vehicles
  • Must have reliable transportation. Able to travel to locations throughout Colorado as required.
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Minimum 5-8 years of communication and community relations leadership experience within a large corporation, non-profit, or government agency that includes significant communications and community relations responsibilities and achievements.
