For over 100 years, the Dumb Friends League has been working to end pet homelessness and animal suffering by providing a strong and steadfast voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. As the largest community-based animal welfare organization in the region, we care for more than 20,000 homeless pets and horses each year at our four facilities and are a national model in animal welfare. Purpose of Position: Responsible for marketing, communications and humane education programs to promote the mission, goals, philosophy and services of the Dumb Friends League.

Areas of Responsibility


This position is a combination of project management, people management and communications skills. Strong writing and speaking skills are coupled with the ability to manage, allocate and deliver projects in a timely manner to support League programs, campaigns and events.

  • Helps create and manage overall marketing, communications and brand strategy
  • Serves as art director on all marketing and communications efforts
  • Ensures public and media relations are aligned with overall marketing and communications strategies
  • Communicates with vice president, president and CEO on significant developments within the department
  • Represents the team in key meetings and, if needed, create/deliver presentations on marketing & communications initiatives
  • Develops, manages and mentors a dynamic and productive team that understands the importance and urgency of exceeding expectations
  • Shares writing responsibility with other communications professionals through the development of web content for three websites, the annual report and other projects, as needed
  • Serves as a back-up for PR Manager
  • Manages team workflow and reviews all deliverables
  • Works with administrative teams to develop internal communications, including the intranet
  • Collaborates with all other teams on event and campaign planning and delivery
  • Develops, drafts and manages marketing and communications plans for various campaigns
  • Monitors, reports on and communicates progress of plans, deliverables, and achievements
  • Develops and monitors budgets
  • Assists with monitoring and evaluating departmental/area processes and procedures to maximize efficient uses of resources
  • • Experience in managing departmental budgets
  • • Understanding of social media marketing
  • • Experience with web content management and strategy
  • • Knowledge of marketing campaign planning and results reporting
  • • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and demands
  • • Demonstrated writing, oral communications and presentation skills, including portfolio of writing samples
  • • Seven years of experience working in communications and/or marketing, with experience managing employees on a creative team
