Job Description: 

Denver Children's Home/The Bansbach Academy have an opening for a Special Education Teacher.

Employees in this job function as professional special education teachers, completing a variety of assignments to teach regular or special subjects in a therapeutic, educational setting.

Areas of Responsibility
  • Teaches classes at the elementary or secondary level, in academic, elective or special subjects (affective education, life skills, independent living), within a specific area of special education.
  • Prepares, adapts, and delivers instructional material.
  • Develops suitable curricula and effective teaching methods based on assessment of students' needs.
  • Evaluates and assesses students' academic and behavioral progress.
  • Supervises students in classrooms, school buildings and social-curricular activities.
  • Works with the Assistant Director of Education to facilitate IEP meetings.
  • Develops and implement Personalized Learning Plans (PLP) and Individualized Education Programs (IEP) which includes goals and objectives.
  • Creates and maintains student records and prepares reports relative to the work.
  • Selects appropriate texts, learning aids, materials, and supplies.
  • Participates in teacher training, teacher meetings and treatment meetings as required.
  • Serves as the educational case manager for a group of up to 7 students. 
  • Supports and encourages positive behaviors and contain negative behaviors in the classroom through the use of behavior management techniques, school-wide contingency management program and individual Behavior Support Plans.
  • Utilizes the interventions and techniques as outline in the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) model to manage the educational milieu.
  • Facilitates ongoing communication with client’s community (i.e. parent/guardian, caseworker, therapist, GAL, probation officer, dorm staff, etc.)
  • When applicable, facilitates communication between educational placements
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Education as needed for the management and overall success of the academic and treatment programs at the Bansbach Academy at the Denver Children's Home.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of teaching.
  • Knowledge of subjects and activities required in therapeutic facility school.
  • Knowledge of instructional methods applicable therapeutic facility school.
  • Knowledge of the texts, materials, supplies and equipment necessary in carrying out educational or recreational programs.
  • Considerable knowledge of current literature, trends and sources of information in the field of education.
  • Ability to evaluate critically the educational achievements of students and to give assignments according to their interests and ability.
  • Ability to prepare lesson plans and organize a meaningful instructional program.
  • Ability to prepare examinations to test the attainment of students.
  • Ability to interpret the results of tests.
  • Ability to maintain discipline and to get along well and develop rapport with children.
  • Ability to maintain records, and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to maintain favorable public relations.
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Possession of a Colorado Department of Education special education license or has the ability to acquire a Statement of Eligibility (SOE)/Special Education Generalist Alternative License.
  • “Highly Qualified” in a core content area or able to become Highly Qualified.
  • Able to work as outlined in the academic school year which includes 180 days and one-six week summer school session.
  • Ability to become certified in CPR/First Aid, QMAP and TCI. Clean driving record.
