The Community Ambassador is the dedicated outreach face of The Birth Squad in the community. This is a peer coach role — built on lived experience, community credibility, and relationships — that supports outreach across all programs, partnership engagement, event representation, and warm handoff coordination. This position does not require clinical licensure.

About The Birth Squad / COPMHP

Perinatal depression is the most common complication of pregnancy and the postpartum period — affecting approximately 1 in 7 birthing people and women in Colorado. For birthing people and women of color, it is more common. Help in our communities can be hard to find and hard to access. Long wait times, out-of-pocket costs, lack of trained mental health providers, and fear of discussing this topic with family, friends, and others are some of the reasons that affordable, timely support can be hard to find.

The Birth Squad Program — operating under the Colorado Perinatal Mental Health Project (COPMHP) — removes those barriers and provides immediate, community-based access to mental health supports. Our two-tiered group model begins with a screening process that feeds into one of two pathways: an open perinatal mood therapy group run by a licensed mental health provider, or a perinatal mental health support group run by a trained peer facilitator. We also offer individual therapy, a structured prenatal cohort program (Blooming Together), and trauma-informed groups for survivors at the Rose Andom Center. These services are offered at no cost to participants across the Denver Metro area.

In addition to offering these services to the broader community, affinity spaces for Black and Spanish-speaking / LatinX women and birthing people are a primary focus. At COPMHP, inclusiveness is at the heart of our goals and interests. We seek to make perinatal mental health support universal for all families, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, language, religion, disability status, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Strong Candidates for This Position

• Have a peer coach background — lived experience with perinatal mental health or supporting a close friend or family member through perinatal recovery
• Are passionate about supporting the emotional health of women, birthing people, and their families through the perinatal period
• Are skilled at building authentic community relationships and representing an organization in diverse spaces
• Have the ability to demonstrate appreciation for each person’s journey to wellness without imposing judgment or individual beliefs
• Have the ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and reach out for support when needed
• Demonstrate appreciation for diversity in all aspects of the work
• Are open and willing to support efforts to achieve equitable outcomes in birth for all women and birthing people in Colorado
• Have basic knowledge of perinatal distress and/or perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (or willingness to receive additional training)
• Have some familiarity with data entry and basic computer skills

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, from the US or another country
• Must pass a comprehensive background check
• Must have experienced a perinatal mood disorder and have been in recovery for at least 12 months, and/or have supported a close friend or family member through recovery from a perinatal mood disorder
• Must have your own mobile phone, computer, and Internet access for Birth Squad-related work
• Comfort representing The Birth Squad at evening and weekend community events as needed

Expectations

• Commit to 15–20 hours per week. Duties include community outreach across all Birth Squad programs, community partnership engagement, representing The Birth Squad at community events, and supporting the warm handoff process
• Are required to attend training prior to beginning the position and must attend weekly supervision. Acquiring additional training is recommended and additional development opportunities will be provided
• Complete and submit program-related paperwork and documentation per Birth Squad standards
• Coordinate with the Program Director on all formal partnership commitments — Community Ambassadors do not execute or promise partnership commitments without Program Director approval
