Summary
The Maintenance & Custodial Technician assists with day-to-day facilities upkeep and cleanliness to help provide a safe and appealing environment for guests, visitors, and employees. This position will perform light repairs, general maintenance, cleaning, and custodial duties in both interior spaces and exterior perimeters of our facilities. The Maintenance & Custodial Technician is responsible for various janitorial, custodial, and maintenance tasks on a daily, weekly, monthly, and as-needed basis. As a member of the Facilities department, this position works closely with the Lead Custodian, Facilities Custodian, volunteers, and other employees from across the organization. The Maintenance & Custodial Technician reports to the Director of Facilities.

Exploration of Flight (EoF) is our flight-focused educational extension. This 15-acre campus is located at the Centennial Airport where we offer showcase events with a variety of aircraft, aviation immersion programs, pilot ground training, and flight experiences. EoF is home to our Blue Sky Gallery exhibit and interactive aviation center featuring an airworthy fleet of civilian and military aircraft.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Please Note – this list is not all inclusive but intended to be a general outline of the essential duties for this position.
- Custodial upkeep of the facilities including exhibit spaces, meeting rooms, administrative offices, restrooms, public areas, retail store, parking lots, landscaping, etc.
- Daily opening and closing procedures, i.e. turning on/off lights, unlocking/locking doors, disarming/arming security alarms, etc.
- Empty trash receptacles, sweep the floors, remove debris, and clean-up spills
- Waste management, snow removal, mowing, grounds-keeping, painting, landscaping, etc.
- Open/close-down exhibits, displays, stow equipment, lock cabinets, secure doors, etc.
- Restock sanitary/paper supplies and maintain the cleanliness of bathrooms
- Comply with proper health code sanitation procedures and safe workplace practices
- Adhere to daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedules
- Communicate with internal staff regarding project updates, areas closed or under repair, maintenance schedules, progress of work orders, etc.
- Operate the floor scrubber (‘Zamboni’), snow plow, aircraft tugs, boom lift, scissor lift, fork lift, and other light machinery
- Coordinate with contract custodial services to maintain coverage during operating hours
- Identify and report on areas in need of deep cleaning or special maintenance
- Operate, maintain, and sanitize custodial equipment in a safe and proper manner
- Conduct regular inspections of bathrooms and common areas to ensure high standards of cleanliness
- Help coordinate with outside vendors, e.g. plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, etc.
- Office duties, e.g. purchase requisitions, expense reporting, work order management, etc.
- Make supply runs, deliveries, and shuttle equipment as needed
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on company equipment and notify the Director of Facilities to any damaged or inoperable equipment
- Assist the Director of Facilities with major repair and maintenance projects
- Assist with the set-up, repair, and removal of exhibits as needed
Working Conditions
The Air & Space Museum operates in an 80-year-old aircraft hangar. Exploration of Flight is located at a busy regional airport. Environmental conditions may vary.

Requirements & Qualifications
- Basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and carpentry skills
- Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in commercial property maintenance
- Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience cleaning large commercial or office facilities
- Experience with work order management software (e.g. MaintainX) highly preferred
- Self-motivated and able to work independently to solve problems without direct supervision
- Able to use handheld and power tools (drill, drivers, hammers, saws, pneumatic tools, etc.)
- Basic computer proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 suite, Google Workspace, etc.
- Able to follow instructions, work efficiently, and meet project deadlines
- Must be reliable, possess a strong work ethic, and good communication skills
- Familiarity with cleaning chemicals, their use, proper application, and safe disposal
- Able to operate a boom lift, forklift, aircraft tug, and other light machinery
- Able to perform the physical workload, e.g. climbing ladders, repetitive motion, etc.
- Comfortable working in elevated or confined spaces, e.g. closets, lifts, scaffolding, etc.
- Squat/lift 50+ lbs. and push/pull carts, supplies, or other equipment weighing up to 100 lbs.
- Able to tolerate strong or unpleasant fumes, odors, and the handling of waste materials
- Comfortable working in all climate (cold/hot/humid/dry) conditions including workshops and outdoor spaces
- Able to tolerate minor cuts, scrapes, and bruises
- Able to navigate 100,000 sq. ft. of floor space and stand for extended periods (up to 8 hours/day)
- Must have a valid Driver’s License and clean driving record (MVR)
