Building a Legal Safety Net for Mission-Driven Nonprofits in Uncertain Times

This presentation will address the challenging legal landscape for nonprofit organizations, and how the pro bono legal community has mobilized to assist the nonprofit sector.  Resources, insights, and lessons learned from the last 20 years of Nonprofit Legal Audit Clinics will be shared, as well as tips on how to advance core values while managing uncertain legal risk.

Kristin M. Bronson is a civic leader, community advocate, and trial attorney with over twenty-five years of experience. As Executive Director of the Colorado Lawyers Committee, Ms. Bronson leads large pro bono legal teams in impact litigation addressing complex systemic problems on behalf of children and underserved communities. In partnership with the Colorado Nonprofit Association, Ms. Bronson oversees the Nonprofit Legal Audit Clinic. Over the last ten years, 1,200 volunteer attorneys have assisted over 450 small nonprofit organizations through the Clinic.

Prior to joining CLC, Ms. Bronson was the Denver City Attorney, managing the Department of Law for the City and County of Denver. She spent nearly twenty years in private practice and is a trained mediator and arbitrator. Ms. Bronson has been the recipient of a number of awards including the Colorado Women’s Bar Association Foundation’s Raising the Bar award, Girl Scouts of Colorado’s Women of Distinction award, Law Week’s Woman Lawyer of the Year, Law Week’s Young Lawyer of the Year, the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce’s 25 Most Powerful Women award, the University of Colorado Law School Dean’s Choice Making a Difference award, the Denver Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 award, the Denver Bar Association and Davis Family Foundation’s Richard Marden Davis award, and others. Ms. Bronson has served dozens of community-based, civic organizations as a board member or volunteer.
