Part 2: Fundraising: Evolving Donor and Trends

Description:
Raising money in a fiercely competitive environment is not for the faint of heart. Whether you’re utilizing social media, organizing events, or crafting proposals, your organization must be on top of funding trends and changing demographics. You also must demonstrate the donors’ return on investment – that your programs and services really work!

This session explores the latest national trends in fundraising, the importance of performance metrics, and steps you can take to give donors confidence in your ability to make measurable change.

Part 3: Key Financial Matters

Description:
Nonprofits are bombarded with Federal and State regulatory requirements, donor compliance expectations and a myriad of internal control and best-practice recommendations as they navigate the financial landscape.  This session with serve as a reminder and provide some easy take-aways and next steps for assisting in your financial compliance and external reporting.

Steve is a member of FORVIS’ National Nonprofit Group and, for more than 15 years, has served a variety of domestic and international nonprofits.  He leads the Utah & Colorado Nonprofit attestation practice and Nonprofit advisory practice, which includes services such as outsourced CFO and Controller engagements, grants management, internal control and operational assessments, peer-to-peer benchmarking, best practice reviews, software selection and on-demand training/ educational/ governance resources.

He is a frequent presenter, trainer and panelist for not-for-profit industry groups, including the Colorado Nonprofit Association and Colorado Society of CPAs (COCPA).  Steve is a regular author and instructor for FORVIS’ nationally acclaimed FORsights® as well as FORVIS’ annual Nonprofit seminar and has served on a variety of FORVIS internal office inspections as well as firmwide task forces to research and implement significant standards changes, including FASB’s Revenue from Contracts with Customers and Presentation of Financial Statements of Not-for-Profit Entities and the AICPA’s Group Audit standards.

Steve is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and COCPA.  He currently serves as treasurer for Village Seven Presbyterian Church and for Disabling Barriers (a Colorado Springs grant-making foundation) as well as member of the COCPA’s nonprofit industry resource panel.  Steve is a 2013 graduate of the Leadership Pikes Peak Leadership NOW! program, which is designed to train participants in leadership and civic-minded skills.

He is a 2007 magna cum laude graduate of University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, with a B.S. degree in business administration with an emphasis in accounting.

 

Dan M. Prater, Senior Managing

Dan is a member of BKD National Not-for-Profit Group. He uses his background in the not-for-profit industry and higher education to help not-for-profit and community groups be more effective in accomplishing their missions. His leadership in local, regional and national organizations makes him well suited to guide clients in the areas of board governance, strategic planning, public relations and outcome assessment. 

He has more than 20 years of experience in organizational leadership and management. Prior to joining BKD, Dan worked and consulted with various organizations and service groups, including domestic violence and child abuse centers, international relief agencies and outreaches as well as private and public universities. 

Dan’s area of expertise is not-for-profit board governance and practice. He has led several large research projects and has been published numerous times on a variety of industry-specific topics such as volunteerism, civic engagement and economic impact. 

He is the past board chair of Nonprofit Missouri, the state’s association for the not-for-profit industry. He is the founding director of Drury University’s Center for Nonprofit Leadership and is the co-creator of the university’s popular master of nonprofit and civic leadership program, for which he continues to serve as an adjunct instructor. 

Dan serves on the board of several Springfield area not-for-profits, including the Ozarks Regional YMCA, Elevate Lives and Rural Freedom. He is on the advisory board of Isabel’s House Crisis Nursery. He was selected as one of the Springfield Business Journal’s 2013 Men of the Year. 

He is a graduate of Evangel University, Springfield, Missouri, with a B.A. degree in communication, and a graduate of Drury University, Springfield, Missouri, with an M.A. degree in communication. He also completed Georgetown University’s Nonprofit Management Executive program.
