Ten Steps to Creating a Board Development & Recruitment Program
During this workshop we will address the problem of nonprofits having an ambiguous, informal, or non-existent board development and recruitment program. We will do this by providing 10 steps and tactics that will aid in making it not only a priority but also a true, consistent, and intentional program. Utilizing rubric, participants will learn where their organizations rank in effective board development. This session will guide key practices for nonprofit leaders to effectively enhance and shepherd their organizations in intentional board development and recruitment programming.
1. Learn a Board Development Improvement & Implementation Framework & Create a Next Steps Implementation Plan: Participants will learn how to implement or improve a board development program that can easily be executed in a robust way with fidelity within just a few months. This will include a process for key staff leadership as well as board leadership. Participants will leave the session with tangible applicable information that will help them with the defining and navigating of the process in creating a board development program. Utilizing the content from the workshop participants will be able to create a “Next Steps” implementation plan for them to take with them to begin executing with their organizations. 2. Learn how to implement DEIA in Board Development & Recruitment: Participants will learn how to strengthen their board effectiveness by implementing DEIA in board development and recruitment. They will gain insights into inclusive recruitment strategies and development practices that foster diverse leadership perspectives, ensuring their governance structure authentically represents and serves their community. The session will integrate board roster audits and structured recruitment processes that prioritize equity and amplify BIPOC voices in leadership. Additionally, participants will be equipped to identify engagement gaps and refine strategies to better meet the needs of their target populations. The presentation will emphasize recruiting boards from diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive board culture, and creating policies that provide a sense of belonging and respect. 3. Learn Tactical Approaches of Recruitment: Participants in this session will also learn tactical practices and soft skilled approaches that can be utilized when creating an intentional board member recruitment program with existing board members that may be slow to change or resistant to change. 4. Learn & Identify Your Organization’s Board Development & Recruitment Score: Participants will be able utilize a scoring rubric that will help them identify how they rank in board development.
About the Presenter
Eddrick Martin is the CEO and Lead Strategist for Elevated Momentum Consulting LLC. He has vast experience working with non-profit organizations in which he has provided leadership in various capacities. He is a twenty-five-year veteran of working and collaborating with nonprofits. His areas of expertise range from board development, strategic planning, leadership skills, organizational effectiveness, volunteer and stakeholder development, and more. Eddrick holds a Master's in Nonprofit Administration and a bachelor's degree in public policy/political science. He has also served in the roles of Executive Director, COO, and Board President of multiple organizations.
