What Funders Really See: 5 Grant Proposal Red Flags and How to Fix Them
This interactive training takes participants behind the scenes of the funder's review process to reveal what causes a grant proposal to be set aside, often before it is fully read. Led by a cofounder who has served for twenty-five years as a foundation trustee and reviewed hundreds of grant applications, the session draws on a rare vantage point: what funders actually notice, and what quietly works against an organization.
We will walk through the most common red flags that give funders pause, including, but not limited to, budget transparency, board composition, demonstrating program impact, and aligning a proposal with what the funder actually requested. For each, we will move beyond naming the problem to show participants how to identify it in their own materials and correct it before they submit.
Key takeaways: Participants will leave able to see their proposals through a funder's eyes, recognize the warning signs that weaken an application, and apply concrete fixes that strengthen their next submission.
What makes this session unique: Most grant training is taught from the applicant's side of the table. This one is taught from the funder's, grounded in decades of firsthand review experience, so participants learn not just how to write a proposal, but how their proposal is read.
