This course focuses specifically on criminal investigations. Three case studies are reviewed in detail and lessons are extrapolated – both failures and successes. Legal theories and investigative techniques and concepts are then reviewed and applied to the case studies. A special emphasis is placed on good note taking processes.

Topics include:

  • Case study #1: A failed malingering case

  • Case study #2: A successful malingering case

  • Case study #3: A prosecuted workers’ compensation certificate forgery

  • Legal theories of theft, criminal intent and false statements

Event Description

Greg Winchell has worked for the past 20 years in the Special Investigations Unit for Pinnacol Assurance.

His principal job is to evaluate referrals for criminal potential and, if appropriate, develop them for referral to the Colorado Atty. Gen.’s office. 

He has an M.A. in the History of Psychology from York University in Toronto. He is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE),

He began his forensic career 25 years ago with the Colorado Attorney General's office in the inmate litigation area.
